Layers Mean Cozy
Winter has a way of bringing out our best methods at staying warm. As temps go down, out come the tricks to hang onto the warmth. Extra thick socks and that sweater you refuse to get rid of are hanging out on the couch with Mr. Blanket and Mrs. Hot Cocoa. Waiting for Spring isn’t that bad when you can stay warm.
But what if you have to fight to stay warm? What if there’s a draft blowing under your nose and the floor is freezing and Mr. Blanket just isn’t cutting it like he used to? A couple of simple changes can keep you toasty through the winter.
First of all, take a look at your windows. Chances are that’s where a lot of your heat is going. Windows are the number one way that heat escapes your house. This means you are paying for heat that you aren’t even getting to enjoy. How about your floor? If it’s a wood floor you probably have some gaps where cold air can sneak in. Your house could really use it’s own version of cozy.
Cellular shades, also called honeycomb shades, are an ingenious way of creating a layer of warmth in your house. They have air pockets that trap cold air and create a barrier between the window and the room. Without this layer of protection, your wonderful warm air hits the cold glass, turns chilly and then circulates back into the room where you and Mrs. Hot Cocoa are trying to enjoy yourselves. Cover those windows and hang onto the heat.
And if you’ve been thinking about putting a rug down, now is the time to do it. Your uncovered floor isn’t very good at trapping heat, especially if it’s uninsulated. A full 10% of your home’s heat can leak out of the flooring. A rug or carpeting will add an awesome layer of protection and comfort to your space. Imagine how much better it will feel on a cold morning to set your toes on a soft fabric instead of a bare surface. If you don’t want to commit to a wall-to-wall treatment, area rugs are the way to go. Go plush for the winter.
Enjoy all the energy you’ll save in a cozy layered space. Spring can wait.
